PU Leather vs Microfiber Leather for Makeup Bags: Which Should You Choose?

PU leather and microfiber leather are both synthetic, animal-free leathers, and both are widely used for makeup bags and vanity cases. They look similar in photos but behave differently in use. Here is how they compare.
How they are made
PU leather is a polyurethane coating on a woven or knitted fabric backing. The surface can be smooth, grained or embossed, for example with a lychee or crocodile pattern.
Microfiber leather also has a polyurethane surface, but on a dense backing made of very fine microfibers. That backing is closer in structure to the fiber layer of real leather, which gives it a fuller hand feel.
Side-by-side comparison
| PU leather | Microfiber leather | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Smooth and light; depends on coating quality | Softer and fuller, closer to genuine leather |
| Durability | Good for everyday bags; lower grades can crack or peel over time | Generally stronger tear and abrasion resistance |
| Weight | Usually lighter | Usually heavier and denser |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Gift-with-purchase bags, trend colors, promotional runs | Premium lines and bags expected to last for years |
These are general characteristics; quality varies a lot between grades of each material, so compare real samples.
Which should you choose?
- Choose PU leather when price, color range and lighter weight matter most, for example for seasonal collections or gift sets.
- Choose microfiber leather when the bag is a premium product and durability is part of your brand promise.
- Either way, ask for the material in your exact color and check the logo method on it: debossing and hot stamping look especially good on both.
What we use
Most of our leather makeup bags are made in PU and vegan leather. If your brand needs microfiber leather, tell us the style and quantity and we will check the options for you. For other fabrics, see makeup bag materials compared.
Why does PU leather peel, and how do you avoid it?
Peeling and flaking are the most common complaints about vegan leather makeup bags. They usually come from a thin coating, a weak bond between the coating and the backing, or heat and oils from cosmetics breaking the surface down over time.
- Ask for the grade, not just "PU": compare two or three PU qualities side by side on the sample.
- Check the backing: a denser backing holds the coating better. Microfiber leather is the stronger option when durability matters.
- Flex test the sample: fold and rub the corners and the zipper edges, where peeling starts first.
- Write care advice: wipe clean, keep away from heat, and let the bag dry before closing it.
Quick answers
Why does my PU leather makeup bag peel?
Usually because of a thin coating or a weak bond to the backing, made worse by heat and oily cosmetics. Higher PU grades and microfiber leather last longer.
Is microfiber leather better than PU for makeup bags?
It is generally stronger and softer, and costs more. PU suits gift sets and seasonal colors; microfiber suits premium lines.
